In order to make politics more open to everyone, it’s important to recognise and honour the different voices in every community. Elbert Guillory’s strategy shows how hard it is for Republicans to get black voters, and it also starts a larger conversation about how important it is to use messages that include everyone.
To really be inclusive, we need to get past stereotypes and have deep conversations that include different points of view. The focus should shift to policies that give black communities more power, like fixing problems like income inequality, systemic racism, and lack of access to good schools.
Rather than talking about “plantations” and “food stamps,” Republicans can stress their desire to make opportunities available to everyone in the United States. The GOP can make politics more welcoming for everyone if they pay attention to the concerns of black voters and make policies that address these concerns.
In the end, getting black people to vote means being genuinely involved, having discussions that are based on policy, and genuinely wanting to solve the unique problems black people face. It’s time to stop telling stories that divide people and work towards a politics that helps and empowers all Americans, no matter where they come from.
